Before you buy
Will Mac Duo work on my Mac?
Mac Duo requires a continuous lid-angle sensor. Check your MacBook model below before purchasing, and run the sensor check if you are not sure.
Known compatible
- MacBook Pro 16-inch introduced in 2019 and later.
- MacBook Pro 14-inch and 16-inch models with continuous lid-angle sensing, including the M1 Pro and M1 Max generation.
- MacBook Air from M2 onward, except MacBook Neo.
Also required: macOS 14.0 Sonoma or later, and Screen Recording permission, because the glass is built out of your live display.
Not supported
- MacBook Air M1, including the original wedge-shaped model.
- MacBook Pro 13-inch M1.
- MacBook Neo.
- Desktop Macs, which have no lid to read.
These Macs do not expose the continuous interface Mac Duo needs. Many MacBooks have a sensor that only detects when the lid is shut, for sleep. That one cannot drive the fold, which is why a Mac can have “a lid sensor” and still not run Mac Duo. An accelerometer, a gyroscope or an ambient light sensor does not count either. What the lid-angle sensor actually is explains the difference.
Not sure? Check your sensor
Run this in Terminal before purchasing. It looks for the interface Mac Duo expects to find, prints one plain answer, and nothing else. It only reads: it installs nothing, writes nothing and changes nothing.
hidutil list --matching '{"PrimaryUsagePage":32,"PrimaryUsage":138}' 2>/dev/null | awk '$4==32 && $5==138 {found=1} END {print "Mac Duo compatibility check"; print ""; if (found) {print "✓ Required lid-angle sensor detected."; print " Your Mac appears compatible with Mac Duo."} else {print "✕ Required lid-angle sensor not detected."; print " Your Mac does not appear to expose the continuous lid-angle sensor"; print " Mac Duo requires. Please check the supported MacBook list before buying."}}'✓ Required lid-angle sensor detected. Your Mac appears compatible with Mac Duo.
✕ Required lid-angle sensor not detected. Mac Duo is not expected to work on this Mac. Check the supported model list above before purchasing.
This is a compatibility check rather than an absolute guarantee either way. Mac Duo searches more broadly than one command can when it starts, and confirms it can actually read a plausible, continuous angle before it runs.
Compatibility guarantee
Mac Duo requires a compatible continuous lid-angle sensor. Please check your MacBook model before purchasing.
If your MacBook is listed as compatible and the sensor check above detects the required interface, but Mac Duo still cannot read the lid angle and work as described, contact us at hello@studiogohl.co.uk. We will investigate and provide the appropriate remedy, including a full refund where required.
If your MacBook is listed as unsupported, or the required sensor is not detected, Mac Duo is not expected to work on that Mac. We strongly recommend checking compatibility before purchasing. If you choose to purchase despite an unsupported or uncertain compatibility result, this voluntary guarantee does not apply, and we may offer a 50% goodwill refund at our discretion.
This goodwill policy does not affect your statutory consumer rights.
If you are about to install, the install guide covers the first-launch approval macOS asks for.
Try it on your own lid
£2.99 once, on up to 5 Macs, with no account and no licence key. Mac Duo needs a compatible continuous lid-angle sensor, so please check compatibility before purchasing. The compatibility guarantee is on that page.
